Fans of visual novels know that itch.io is a site full of morally questionable titles, games for which the word “trash” is an understatement, and so many AI-generated anime girls that you start to wonder if you’re not the simulation and they’re the actual human race. But from a developer’s perspective, this madhouse is an essential stop on the journey through visual novel storefronts. Publishing is free, their cut of each sale is smaller, there’s no DRM, they allow greater creative freedom, no desktop app required… Does that mean it’s better than Steam? Not even close. If anything, I’d say they complement each other.
